Deutsche Alpenstraße: Bodensee to Königssee

Germany's oldest touring route: 360 kilometers curving beneath the Bavarian Alps, connecting the island town of Lindau, King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle, Zugspitze massifs, and emerald Lake Königssee.

Stage 1 (Nights 1 & 2)

Lindau on Lake Constance to Füssen

105 km • 2h Drive

Start at the historic harbor entrance of Lindau on Lake Constance. Ascend through the Allgäu dairy pastures over the 106 hairpin bends of the Oberjoch Pass, descending toward Füssen.

Spend two nights based below the Ammergau Alps, touring King Ludwig II's 19th-century Romanesque Revival Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle at sunrise.

Castle Access Rule: Timed-entry slots for Neuschwanstein must be secured online; early morning slots avoid the 4,000 daily tourist buses.
Stage 2 (Nights 3 & 4)

Garmisch-Partenkirchen & Zugspitze

65 km • 1h 15m Drive

Drive east past Ettal Abbey and Linderhof Palace. Base for two nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Take the state-of-the-art cable car up to the peak of the Zugspitze (2,962m), the highest mountain in Germany, looking out across 400 Alpine summits in four countries.

Walk the deep wooden catwalks of the Partnach Gorge (Partnachklamm) through vertical limestone water chutes.

Stage 3 (Nights 5 & 6)

Chiemsee & Berchtesgaden National Park

190 km • 3h Drive

Continue along the B305 past Lake Tegernsee and Lake Chiemsee before climbing into the Berchtesgadener Land beneath the sheer east face of Mount Watzmann.

Conclude at Lake Königssee with an electric wooden boat cruise to St. Bartholomä church, listening to the famous trumpet echo off the sheer fjord-like mountain walls.
